Jaundice explained: Jaundice is a clinical sign of yellowing of the skin. This condition occurs when there are high levels of bilirubin in your system. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment that formed via the breakdown of red blood cells in the liver. If the liver is damaged or not functioning this can lead to a build up of bilirubin.

Bilirubin: The liver usually "cleans up" the products (bilirubin) that are released when old red blood cells in your body get recycled. In liver failure, these products cant be cleaned up and instead build up in the blood stream. Eventually, at high levels these get deposited in the skin, eyes and mucous membranes which end up looking yellow.
