Excessive: Fat as an energy source is dangerous when it is the sole or near sole source of energy. Fat stores are used for other purposes like insulation and protection of organs. So reductions in body fat can hit dangerous levels. Anything below 15% body fat for non-elite athletes is pushing the boundaries of safety.
