Dislocated rib: You most likely have a dislocated rib that did not heal correctly. A way to confirm this is if your chest hurts when you push directly on the area of trauma. A chest x-ray will show any obvious dislocation, you can also be seen by a chiropractor or an osteopathic physician for manipulative treatments.

Costochondritis: Often times, following trauma to the rib cage, a person can develop long term pain. This is frequently secondary to inflammation at the junction of the ribs and cartilage. This is known as costochondritis. Usually treated with anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen, but may require injections of steroid.
