Virus vs environment: If your symptoms are prolonged, it is more likely to be environmental in origin. If the mucus is progressively yellow and green it might represent a secondary bacterial infection such as sinusitis. High fever would indicate infection, although viral infection are more often low fevers. Smoking would aggravate the condition. Stay away from older generation antihistamines as they thicken mucus.
