URI: Viral upper respiratory tract infections generally run their course in 7 to 10 days. If symptoms persist beyond that a bacterial sinus and/or bronchial infection may be present that require antibiotic therapy. Until then irrigate your nasal passages with warm salt water to promote drainage and, if necessary, use a decongestant nasal spray for only a short time. A mild cough suppressant syrup helps.
