A member asked:

I have a broken tibia and fibula. doc says he wants to put in pin and rod. i'm a athlete and i don't want it. do i need it. can i heal naturally or no?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Choices: The doc suggesting pins/rods suggests poor position. Bones will heal by themselves naturally, but if they are not aligned well, then they will heal badly aligned. As an athlete you will probably get a better result and probably not need a 6 week cast with the rods/pins. We stich lacerations to facilitate healing and good alignment, but unstitched will heal. Is basically the same with bones..
