Ultrasound: For a suspected clot in a vein from the groin down , venous ultrasound is the gold standard for diagnosis. You can add to this a d-dimer blood test. A positive d-dimer is non specific but a negative is very specific. Small clots in the tibial veins are sometimes hard to identify. You should see a vein specialist for a venous evaluation.
