A1c: Yes. The a1c is a measure of your average blood glucose levels over the preceding 3 months. Chronically elevated blood sugar does increase the risk for coronary artery disease. I notice you also smoke. This makes it a double-whammy. If metformin alone is not controlling your sugar you will need to work with your doctor to find a way that does work, which might include metformin plus other meds.

Metformin/Smoking: In addition please note that though metformin is first line of treatment, it is not a substitute for insulin.It simply helps by activating muscles to "take up" more glucose or " asking liver to produce less glucose.The fact that metformin is not working( which is not uncommon) indicates that time for second agent . Also ; obesity= Insulin resistance. Diabetic smoker=increase diabetic complications.
