A member asked:

14 yr old son. is a small (5mm) congenital mole evaluated for melanoma the same as an acquired mole (e.g., abcds)? or is the examination different?

Change: If the mole has always been there, you look for an area of obvious change.

Similar: We still use the same ABCDEs when examining congenital moles for the possibility of malignancy. While congenital nevi to carry a risk of developing into melanoma the amount of increased risk is debatable. The larger the nevi the higher the risk seems to be. I would either have the lesion excised and examined by a pathologist or been seen by a dermatologist who can follow the skin lesion for change
