No set rules: To minimize swelling after an injury, cold applications are recommended for 24 to 48 hours and then switch to warm applications for 20 minutes every few hours. The heat increases blood supply and breaks down blood clots under skin and promotes healing. Wrap the ice and the hot packs in a towel when applying. Discontinue the warm applications when soreness improves which is usually after several day.
