What are the main causes of an elevated hgb?

Primary and secondar: Primary elevation in hemoglobin is a bone marrow disorder called p.Vera, confirmed by a jak2 mutation test. Secondary elevation is due to other causes such as dehydration, low oxygen, exogenous testosterone/erythropoietin. The first requires an hematologist, the second requires the stimulus to be interrupted.

Usually low oxygen: 1. Erythropoietin producing neoplasm- (renal cell cancer, hepatocellular cancer, cerebellar hemangioblastoma, pheochromcytoma and uterine fibrioids.) 2. Low oxygen secondary- to chronic pulmonary disease, right to left cardiac shunt, sleep apnea, massive obesity, high altitude or red cell defects. 3. Other causes include genetic conditions, anabolic steroids, use of diuretics (water pills.
