Possible, usually no: Typical herpes and syphilis sores -- the kind you'll see in textbooks or on line -- look very different from one another and rarely would be confused by an experienced clinician. But both STDs can cause atypical lesions, and each sometimes can mimic the other. Genital herpes is more than a hundred times more common than syphilis. See doc ASAP for ANY new genital sore or if you suspect either one.
