A member asked:

Could a baby born to an active alcoholic mother be an alcoholic at birth?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No: By definition a baby cannot be alcoholic, but babies born to mothers who drink through pregnancy can go through a lot of problems - including fetal alcohol syndrome, a series of birth defects that effect the face, can cause mental retardation, adhd; in addition babies can be born physically dependent on alcohol and need to be withdrawn. Alcoholism requires making bad choices - babies dont do that.
