Easy access shelf: If baby is stable enough at birth many ob's use this as an easy shelf &way for mom to see baby as the cord is cut. Given the stealth nature of babies existence in the preceding 9mo it helps with the bonding process. Some also do the skin to skin experience but a lot of this depends on the comfort level of mom/ob and stability of the baby.
