FNA: FNA - fine needle aspiration, is a procedure where a thin needle is inserted directly into the thyroid nodule. Cells from the nodule are aspirated and put on glass slides and stained. The slides are looked at under the microscope and a diagnosis is given. The procedure is usually done after the skin has been numbed up with local anesthesia. Depending on the diagnosis, surgery may be necessary.
