Phobias are neurotic: Personality disorders are not. Neurotic disorders bother the people who have them, they want to change even if they do not know how and fear changing. People with personality disorders are happy the way they are, with avoidant personality disorder, the person is happy being reclusive and staying away from social contacts. Agoraphobics are fearful but don't like being unable to get out and live.

Agoraphobia is fear: open spaces, crowds, etc. It is a type of irrational fear. Avoidant Personality Disorder is more rooted in feelings of inferiority, fears that one may be rejected, humiliated, etc. In either case, a clinical psychologist can be helpful to you. Peace and good health.
