Looks worse than is: The urinary catheter diameter is chosen to fit the diameter of your urethra the hole that you urinate through. The area is sterilized and a catheter lubricated with numbing gel is inserted until urine flows out and a small balloon filled with either saline or air holds it in place. It is not very painful but looks so.
