Doctors, what are your opinions on self harm?

Dr. Pamela Pappas answered

Specializes in Psychiatry

Self harm: My patients have shown me that they self-harm when they don't know healthier ways of dealing with pain. This pain can come from many different experiences, but behaviors like self-cutting, burning, or remaining in dangerous relationships, etc are never healthy. In some people it has an addictive quality. Psychotherapists can work with you on new tools and mechanisms to manage painful emotions.
