Viral infection: Most upper respiratory infections, including swollen tonsils are viral. A culture of the tonsils will inform us whether a pathogenic bacteria is present and an antibiotic is needed. I wouldn't call it first aid but gargling with an antiseptic or even salt water might help. If the swelling is not painful, your immune system should result in the tonsil returning to normal.
