Almost certainly: Current thinking is that autism and asperger's disorder are not truly different disorders but rather expressions of different severity of the same underlying problems. That's why the new diagnostic manual under consideration is considering having just a single diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to cover autism, asperger's, and pdd nos. Genetics are proving to be quite complex.

Absolutely: > 30 known genetic syndromes, many heritable, have autism as part of their neurodevelopmental profile. Comparative genomic hybridization shows copy repeat errors in tiny bits of dna in ~ 15% of kids with asd's;i.e., instead of getting 1 copy of each bit from mom & 1 from dad, they got either 2 from 1parent & 1 from the other, or 1 from a parent & 0 from the other -not all heritable, but genetic.
