Ankle pain: There can be many reasons for this that can be evaluated by a foot and ankle surgeon. X-rays will be taken and possibly an mri. These are done to evaluate for possible internal joint pathology. These can include scar tissue, torn cartilage and other osseous lesions. Sometimes an injection is done to confirm the pain originates from inside the joint.

Injury to tendons: Most likely you have an injury to the tendons that run across the top of your ankle. Sometimes though the inside of the ankle joint itself can be damaged creating arthritis. This could hurt with certain positions or pressure.
