No blood flow: Gangrene is the end result of not enough blood getting to the tissue. It can be from blood vessel blockages, caused by problems like diabetes or smoking, or from infection. If the problem is caught before the tissue dies, sometimes the underlying cause can be corrected. If gangrene has set it, sometimes amputation is the only option - and may be life-saving.

Her risk factors: For circulation problem would include aging , hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, irregular heart rhythm, sedentary life etc. Gangrene potentially can cause blood infection thus amputation of the toes may be needed as last resort to prevent such complication.
