Nerve irritation: As described, it sounds as though a nerve that originates form your neck and supplies your l upper arm is being pinched. When you move your neck certain ways, it may take the pressure off the pinched area.

Degenerative spine: Problems with bony spurs, disk herniation, etc. Can be pushing on the nerve to your arm. It is not uncommon that moving the neck a certain way decreases the pressure on the nerve from these degenerative changes and reduces symptoms.
