Addiction: He should definitely get added support - either via alcoholics anonymous, group therapy and physician help. It takes a village of support and encouragement to shake and addiction and he needs medical professionals to aid in any withdrawal symptoms as well. Bottom line though he has to make that first step. No one else can do it for him.

Seeing an addiction: Medicine specialist or an addiction psychiatrist are good ideas. Alcoholics anonymous is a great organization as well.

Needs medical help: To quit drinking alcohol because withdrawal can be deadly without it. He will need to consult with a physician experienced with addiction. Once he is safely detoxed, he can attend aa meetings, enroll in an outpatient addiction program, or admit himself to residential treatment to learn about his disease and ways to manage it. Therapy can also help. Best of luck!
