I got an mmr and varicella and the area is hot with redness and has swelling. is this an allergic reaction or is it normal?

Depends: If the redness resolves within 48 to 96 hours after administration, then it is normal.

A local reaction: It is a local allergic reaction to the vaccine and happens not infrequently. A cold compress and if necessary some pain medication such as Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen you don't need to worry about. If it gets worse (unlikely) see your physician.
