Several ways: Rest it, an ace wrap can help stabilize, if swollen-icing it for 1-2 days can help, keeping it elevated when not using it . A trial of NSAID medication can help. Swimming is very good exercise and can be beneficial.

I am not ortho spec: But I do suffer from the condition myself. Swimming is great! the patella tracks abnormally, which leads to your pain. Wearing a knee back that forces the patella to track properly will help. A good physical therapist will show you some exercises that will be helpful at well, but you have to keep up with them.
