How bad is it?: Isotretinoin is the strongest and most effective medication for acne and is not for the faint-hearted. Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is an antibiotic and should never be used as sole therapy; a combination of topical benzoyl peroxide plus a course of systemic tetracycline often clears moderately severe acne. If you're female, the oral contraceptive pill if right for you may work; spironolactone's another rx.
