Many options: That depends on the stage and his overall medical condition. Patients with stage III disease and good health are generally candidates for combined chemo-radiation or sequential chemo followed by radiation. Patients with stage IV disease may receive chemotherapy or 'targeted' therapy depending on the genetic profile of the tumor. In stage IV, radiation is used as palliation.

And looking at the 'big picture' too is important. What does he want? Sometimes changing the focus of treating cancer, to treating symptoms is more important. I'm not saying it's time to 'give up' but would ask about hospice/palliative care to have ALL the treatment options available. We'll be thinking of you...

Be there for him: I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather. I can't over emphasize importance of "Be there for him." Let him know that you care. Spend time w/him. Listen to him. Ask him what he wants. Any goals? Events to experience? Does he want more surgery? Radiation? Chemotherapy? Or would he rather focus on care rather than cure eg hospice. Help him complete advance care directives. http://goo.gl/XJUEGK
