Dr. Jason Kline answered

Specializes in Nephrology and Dialysis

Nephrology referral.: Polycystic kidney disease tends to be progressive in nature, and in many cases leads to kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant. There is no cure, but with proper management, kidney failure can be delayed as much as possible. Your daughter-in-law should be under the care of a nephrologist who can provide the specific advice she needs. Best of luck to her.

Polycystic kidney: Your relative should see a nephrologist (N) to assess her kidney function and see if she is near going on some sort of dialysis. Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) leads to renal failure eventually and you need to have her evaluated by a N. Then, you will get a more meaningful answer to your question about her. Good luck.
