A member asked:

Could use your help docs! my dad is an alcoholic..he is having blood urea 56.and some complications in the kidney..can it be cured without dialysis?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Impossible to say: just from the information you have given. A BUN of 56 can mean many things, including kidney failure. It can come from serious dehydration, blood being digested in the bowel, or liver damage from alcohol beginning to impair the kidneys. The creatinine is the more important number and I don't have that. A gastroenterologist can advise your father, who MUST stop drinking if he wants to live.
