Are psychiatric hospitals effective or do more damage by keeping the mentally ill locked away?

They save lives: Like all other types of hospitals they offer treatment for the more seriously ill. In today's health care system it is difficult if not impossible for you to be "locked away". You can be detained in a locked facility only if your md determines you are a serious danger to yourself or others.
