ANA: Is not specific for any type of autoimmune disease like hashimoto's thyroiditis (the most common cause of hypothyroidism). 3-15% of normal healthy individuals have a positive ana. It is sensitive though, meaning that if you have an autoimmune disease (like ra) then most have a positive ana. Autoimmune diseases also tend to occur together. A positive anti-TPO antibody is specific for hashimoto's.
