Unknown: At this time the cause of fibroids is "unknown". We do know that they are more common in patients whose family has had fibroids as well as african american, native american and hispanic women. The growths are mostly benign although a very small percentage(less than 1 %) can be cancerous and spread rapidly through the bloodstream.
