Very common: It is more the rule than the exception, especially in the elderly, for patients to have some degree of short-term memory loss and gaps in their recall of events during the hospitalization period after a major surgical procedure (aka postoperative cognitive dysfunction). This is largely due to both the anesthetics used during the surgery and the narcotic pain medications (e.G, dilaudid) post-op.

Amnesia: While you may have been given a lot of Dilaudid you were probably also given other medications. All of them help sedate, relax and provide analgesia. Not having or having minimal recollection is very normal.
