Eat healthy: And keep your weight normal. Don't eat an excessive protein intake; keep your glucose, BP and cholesterol as close to normal as possible. Ask you doctor about an ace inhibitor or arb for renal protection.

Diabetic kidneys: Yes! there are several important ways to protect your kidneys. Control blood pressure and sugar, maintain good hydration, avoid toxins to the kidney (ie. Iv dye). Meds such as ace inhibitors are essential for diabetics to protect long-term kidney function.
