Evaluate the Cause: The medical term for spur is "osteophyte". There are many causes for the focal bony overgrowth ranging from a traction osteophyte from high loads applied to the patella to osteoarthritic osteophytes. Typically, the treatment of the "spur" is not isolated, rather treatment is directed at the underlying reason the spur developed and thus could range from activity modification to rehab to surgery.
