Absolute vs percent: It is important if the absolute number of lymphocytes is increased. In adults the cutoff is usually 4000 per microliter. If only the percentage is increased, that may not be significant. If their absolute number is not increased, there is little reason for concern. If there is an absolute increase in the number of lymphocytes, viral infections and chronic lymphocytic leukemia should be ruled out.
