A 23-year-old male asked:

i add oil on vegetables to make my salad. which one is better for health, olive oil or sunflower oil?

Avoid Canola Oil: The way it is processed and can be genetically engineered. It's from the rapeseed, a variant of mustard. Olive oil is much better than sunflower oil. In general, avoid vegetable oils and run from corn oil, another gmo. Yes, you can fry w/olive oil. Peace and good health.

A 39-year-old male asked:

Is olive oil good for cooking and if yes then which kind of olive oil....Virgin or normal.?

Yes. Possibly virgin: A trial in 200 men showed : oil with higher amounts of polyphenols, virgin olive oil, had greater effects in raising hdl-c and lowering oxidized LDL than refined olive oil. This study does appear to show that other components apart from monounsaturated fatty acids, affect lipid levels, it is uncertain whether it was actually the polyphenols that resulted in these differential benefits.

Can olive oil replace insect repellents?

Dr. Sarah Kohl
Travel Medicine 35 years experience
NO: Insect repellents are designed to repell insects, olive does not work. When your doctor recommend insect repellents it is to prevent the diseases insects carry. Many of these diseases can kill you. Only 20% picardin and 30% deet have been proven effective. Resist the tempation to use ineffective repellents which can put you at risk for serious illnesses.
A 45-year-old member asked:

What health benefits are associated with olive oil?

1 doctor answer2 doctors weighed in
Dr. Pamela Pappas
Psychiatry 42 years experience
Olive oil: Olive oil contains mono-unsaturated fatty acids (mufas), which are healthy fats compared to saturated and trans fats. Mufas may lower total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels; may also help normalize blood clotting. And some research shows that mufas may benefit Insulin levels and blood sugar control, which helps if you have type 2 diabetes! moderate use only, though.
