Hematoma: What your are describing sounds like a hematoma which is escaped blood from the vein which has accumulated in the tissue around the vein. This is why the skin is bruised (black and blue). The pain is from the irritation from the multiple needle sticks. Apply ice for the first 48 hours then heat. Ibuprofen will also help. This should resolve over about one week.
