Yes: Severe ear pain when flying indicates inability to equalize pressure through the eustachian tube ( the tube that connects the middle ear space to the back of the nose. This may be a a one time problem. But you can check et function with an audiologist who can determine et function with your being able to equalize a negative or a positive pressure with tympanometry.
