MR severity: Mr severity is assessed with echo and color doppler. Certainly an increase in the size of the left atrium is not beneficial but does not necessarily mean that the mr is getting worse.

Insufficient info: I'm sorry - there is insufficient information to provide a meaningful answer. I would want to examine before and after echos and to know the details of your surgery at at a minimum.

Normal variation: Left atrial (la) size varies from day to day depending on fluid volumes. Closure of the ASD prevents blood going to the right atrium and the la would be expected to get a bit bigger. Mr is assessed by echo and is not affected by the ASD closure. The palpitations ("skipped beats") may be of a concern, particularly if atrial fibrillation. This should be evaluated further.

ASD closure: When you close the ASD the blood no longer shunts from left to right atrium. The increase in left atrial size is not unexpected. Don't be afraid to ask your doctors to explain changes that concern you.
