A member asked:

Please help docs! is smelling cigarette smoke and breathing it in the same as smoking it?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No: However, if you smell cigarette smoke it means you are inhaling small quantities of it. This is second-hand smoke. Occasional inhalation of smoke does not likely cause problems in most people, although people with asthma or other respiratory conditions may be unusually sensitive to its effects. Regular inhalation of smoke however can cause increase in infection and even potentially cancer.
