Post Op Pain: Surgeons use pain to monitor for complications from surgery. I am sure they sent you home with instructions, but if your pain is not well controlled then your surgeon must be contacted.

It will likely work: There are other options but vicodin should work for you nearly as well as vicoprofen (hydrocodone and ibuprofen). But if vicoprofen (hydrocodone and ibuprofen) does not work, then ask your doctor for something stronger or different.

Vicodin: If the vicodin is not working for you then you should call the oral surgeon or dentist that did the extraction and report this. They will give you the best advise on what to do.

Severe pain: First, in many cases we cannot completely alleviate pain even with strong medication following difficult surgical procedures. The worst is the first 24 hours and then it should start to subside. You can supplement the vicodin with some advil, Motrin or aleve (naproxen) (if your dentist approves). Different medications work differently for different individuals. Call and discuss this issue with the surgeon.
