Air flow restriction: Subglottic stenosis is a congenital or acquired narrowing of the subglottic airway. Congenital subglottic stenosis is a birth defect. Acquired subglottic stenosis generally follows as an after-effect of airway intubation. Mild forms can be asymptomatic. If there are symptoms, it can include: shortness of breath, cough, bronchitis or pneumonia. In worse cases, it can lead to airway obstruction.

Breathing related: Subglottic stenosis is a narrowing of the airway below the vocal cords. It can be congenital, related to intubation, or trauma. Rarely it can be related to an autoimmune-like condition. Symptoms would be difficulty breathing especially after exertion. There will be noise (stridor) usually with both inhalation and exhalation.
