Saline wash/segment: A bronchoalveolar lavage is a saline wash of a segment of the lung. It is sent to the laboratory for studies such as cultures and cell counts. A bronchoscopy is the actual procedure which involves a scope placed into the airway via the nose or mouth, to visualize the airways.
