Food Allergy: Occasionally food allergies can cause tingling of the tongue, and swelling of taste buds. It might be nothing and just cause occasional aphthous ulcers; however, it might be a good idea to keep a diary of what you are when that happens, or perhaps talk to an allergist, as some allergies can become life threatening!

Lingual Papillae: Our taste buds are actually much farther back on our tongue. You are describing the "papillae" that are near the tip. Those can become irritated and inflamed if you burn them with hot foods, or consistently rub them against the edges of your front teeth, upper or lower. If you have a fractured edge of a tooth or tip of a cusp, visit your dentist so that surface can be polished.
