Appearance: "gross" in pathology does not mean "ick" (just a common coincidence), it means, "what do I see just by looking at it?" so from the container came 1/2ml of dark (red), blood-clot-like 'stuff.' from there, it gets prepped, stained and studied, usually under the microscope, for the "microscopic" report.
