Infected ingrown: Infected ingrown toe nails cause swelling and tenderness. Bacteria grow between the skin and the nail. Ingrown toe nails irritate and pierce the surrounding skin. This in itself can make it swell. The resulting infection usually needs to be drained by a dr. One thing that does help is soaking the foot in a basin of lukewarm water with 2 tablespoons of epsom salt.
