I am now 10 days late with my period. on the 8th day of being late i took a hpt that turned out negative. what are the chances i am pregnant?

Sounds neg: It seems as if there might be another reason for the delay in your period, not that you are pregnant. And negative pregnancy test at this point in time is a very good indication that you're not pregnant. Keep using birth control if you don't want to be a parent yet. And if menses doesn't come soon, then consider seeing a doctor for evaluation. Could be hormonal, thyroid, or weight.
