Maybe not: If the tendon is mostly intact and there is no gap you could try conservative care. Was this an acute injury? If so better prognosis for success without surgery. Would need 6-8 weeks of protection from sudden jerking force ( no heavy resistance). Needs to be watched and should steadily improve. If not, may need surgery.
